News is not news.
News today is marketing.
News is "what went wrong today, that will keep your attention so we can sell advertising space".
News is also what the editors think the public should know because of their political or commercial persuation. If news does not have an angle it is not news for long. Witness the hurricane flooding Lousiana: The first news was about what happened, after that it was all about what everyone thought about what had happened and why.
Politics is marketing and most polital news is staged. Outrage is choreographed. When politicians don't have a vision and the courage that goes with it, they take polls. It's a little like finding a parade, then trying to work yourself up to the front, so it looks like everyone is following you. Real leaders don't take polls.
The boobyprize of success is taking it for granted. America is a bubble with 5% of the world's population living lives the rest of the world can only imagine. America is a huge success, top dog, lone superpower and the envy of a world only half baked, and still quite volitile. Americans for the most part has come to rely on a system of government, rather than on that which created it, and this is a problem. A political party, a coorporation, a church, a newspaper is a system and I think the real struggle in today's world is not between one system of government, or religion, or enterprize, but between all humans and all systems.
The real problems of the world seems to me to occur when systems are running human beings, not the other way around. When doctrine becomes more important than good sense we loose all balance. Systems are minds without heart. The mind itself is not evil, but incapable of trust, and therefore thrives on conflict. Just as the mind and heart must come into balance within each human being, so must the world find balance between its systems and that which makes us human, that which connects us all but cannot be defined.
I suggest a great proliferation of art, music and dance as a step in the right direction.
